Galileo Thermometer - 44cm

$95.00
Tax included.

The Galileo thermometer is made of a sealed glass cylinder containing a clear liquid and a series of sealed glass bulbs with different densities. When the temperature of the liquid changes, so does the density. A higher temperature causes the bulbs to sink. The lowest bulb in the upper section of the thermometer shows the right temperature. This beautiful sealed glass container contains 10 colourful, carefully weighted balls of hand-blown glass.

This property was first observed by Galileo, and the thermometers have been named in his honour. By observing which bauble is floating in the middle of the column, or by averaging the ones bracketing the gap (if there is no ball in the middle), the temperature can be read. This large model is accurate between 16°C and 34°C, and sits at a proud 44cm tall.
